Local Government and Planning Ministers Council

The Local Government and Planning Ministers Council was formed by COAG in 2001 by merging the Local Government Ministers Conference and Planning Ministers Conference. LGPMC brings together Commonwealth, state and territory local government and planning ministers together with the ALGA President. The LGPMC is supported by the Local Government and Planning Joint Committee (Joint Committee), with the Local Government Joint Officers' Group (LOGJOG) and the Planning Officials' Group (POG), as standing sub-committees.

Special meeting: Inter-Governmental Agreement signed
A special meeting of local government representatives of the Local Government and Planning Ministers' Council was convened today in Canberra. The Council agreed to and signed the 'Inter-Governmental Agreement Establishing Principles to Guide Inter-Governmental Relations on Local Government Matters'.
Framework for National Action on Affordable Housing
4 August 2005, Melbourne
At a joint meeting of state, territory and Australian Government Ministers for Housing, Local Government and Planning in Melbourne today Ministers noted the initiatives being taken in individual jurisdictions to improve the supply of affordable housing. Acknowledging the significant issues facing all governments in the provision of affordable housing, including market forces of supply and delivery, Ministers agreed to adopt a Framework for National Action on Affordable Housing.
National summit on the future of Australia's cities and towns
4 June 2004, Canberra
Today state and territory planning ministers participated in a National Summit to discuss issues affecting the sustainability in the development and management of Australia's cities and towns. Strategies to achieve the vision include: developing a national. shared vision; an integrated governance framework; foster and improve the information base; develop a national settlement strategy; providing active citizen programs; improving infrastructure; conducting a sustainability audit of taxes and charges; and funding and pricing.
Report: Local government and cost shifting

The Council considered the recommendations of the Hawker Report - Rates and Taxes: A fair share for responsible local government. Members noted the Report's 18 recommendations, which cover such issues as inter-governmental relations, roles and responsibilities of different levels of government, financing of local government and capacity building.
First meeting of Council
15 July 2003, Darwin
The Local Government and Planning Ministers' Council met for the first time on Tuesday 15 July 2003. Members agreed that the Council would lead debate and decision making on key strategic policy matters for Local Government and planning in Australia and New Zealand that can be addressed at the national level.
