Connecting Local Government Conference

13 January 2004

The next IT revolution: Connecting 0ur Three Spheres of Government

  • Conference dates: 15 - 16 March 2004
  • Venue: Melbourne

How do 720 local government authorities, eight state and territory governments and one federal government get incredibly diverse IT systems and programs to work together to share information, reduce duplication, improve efficiency and enhance service delivery to the public?

Connecting governments across not only jurisdictions, but also spheres, is complex and difficult. But the rewards could be substantial. It's also at the cutting edge of the IT revolution around the world and Australia is helping to lead the way.

It will be the theme of the Australian Local Government Association's inaugural Connecting Local Government Conference to be held in Melbourne on 15-16 March next year.

ALGA President, Councillor Mike Montgomery, said improving 'interoperability' between spheres of government was an immense challenge. "We are embarking on a quest that holds enormous promise for all Australians in terms of improving service delivery, increasing access and reducing duplication. It has the potential to make Australia's creaking federation much more efficient, effective and responsive to community need," Cr Montgomery said.

"Local government in Australia, with assistance from programs such as the Australian Government's Networking the Nation initiative, is helping to drive the search for what is now termed 'joined up' government. We need integrated services that break down the barriers of government structure and jurisdiction, and services that meet the needs of individuals and business."

The Connecting Local Government Conference will:

  • review progress towards connecting governments
  • help develop a directional roadmap for the future
  • provide expert speakers on key issues including standards, information architecture, authentication, knowledge management, and common business practices
  • show case some impressive current initiatives that are helping to connect governments in Australia
  • have three streams of workshops to cater for (1) IT staff and specialists (2) management, and (3) those who are 'just starting' and wanting to explore e-government solutions.
