2004 National Local Roads Congress

More than 500 councillors, local government officials and road experts from across Australia will attend ALGA's 5th National Local Roads Congress to be held in the Barossa Valley on Monday 12 July and Tuesday 13 July.

Key issues will include the recently announced AusLink national land transport plan, the operation of the renewed Roads to Recovery program, transport security, road safety and regional road programs.

Monday 12 July

  • AusLink and Roads to Recovery forum: What will the new programs include, how will they work?
  • Address by Senator Ian Campbell, Federal Roads Minister
  • Address by Martin Ferguson MP, Shadow Transport and Infrastructure Minister
  • Regional road programs: Case studies from NSW, WA and SA
  • Transport Security

Tuesday 13 July

  • State/local government co-operation
  • Road safety: Case studies from WA, Australian Automobile Association and Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia
  • National heavy vehicle reforms: Impact on local government
  • Mobility for older people/community transport: Case studies from Victoria, SA and NSW

Chris Thompson will describe the operation of the integrated regional transport plan for south west Perth - one of the state's first programs to integrate local and state government transport services. Rockingham has a population of more than 83,000, covers an area of 261 sq km and has more than 700km of road.

Ms Harris is a national expert in mobility needs for older people. She will be showcasing a range of local government community transport programs in Victoria.
