28 January 2005

The Australian Local Government Association has today extended its warmest congratulations to its President, Councillor Paul Bell, who has become a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the Australia Day honours list.

Cr Bell is also President of the Local Government Association of Queensland and a long serving member of the Emerald Shire Council.

Cr Bell was first elected to the Emerald Shire Council in Central Queensland in 1985. He was elected as mayor in 1991, a position he held for nine years. He was elected as Vice President of ALGA in November 2002 and became President of both the Local Government Association of Queensland and ALGA in 2004.

He also chairs Australian Local Government Training Limited, a national industry training advisory board, and is Deputy Chair of Queensland Rail and a Director of Ergon Energy Corporation.

"Cr Bell has made an outstanding contribution to his community, to the state of Queensland and to local government nationally," ALGA Chief Executive, Mr Ian Chalmers, said today.

"He is also serving local government internationally as Vice President of the United Cities and Local Government (Asia Pacific region).

"He is passionate about local communities, local democracy and local government.

"On behalf of ALGA, I extend our congratulations to Cr Bell for this well deserved recognition of his contribution to local government.

"We also extend our congratulations to the significant number of elected representatives and officials from local government who have been named in this year's Australia Day honours list," Mr Chalmers said.
