Councils taking action to plan for a 'Community for all ages'
27 September 2005
Australian Local Government Association Vice President, Cr Geoff Lake, has today (27 September) outlined a range of action being taken by councils across the country to better meet the challenges of an ageing community.
In an address to a seminar in Sydney - 'A Community for All Ages - Building the Future' – Cr Lake focussed on challenges and actions in the areas of town planning, housing and transport.
He also outlined ALGA’s comprehensive work on local government and ageing issues, undertaken in partnership with the Australian Government and Federal Ageing Minister, Julie Bishop.
Cr Lake’s speech has been posted to the ALGA website and can be found at: www.alga.asn.au/newsroom/speeches/
The seminar is the first of a ‘National Speakers Series’ on ageing in place strategies and is an Australian Government initiative supported by ALGA.
The Speaker Series aims to increase awareness of the need to design the built environment - the building, structures and spaces in which we live, work and play - to sustain health and well-being for an ageing population.
A symposium to be held at the National General Assembly of Local Government (7-10 November) on health and ageing, will also form part of the National Speaker Series.
As well as holding one of the two ALGA Vice President positions, Cr Lake is also President of the Municipal Association of Victoria.
