ALGA launches age-friendly built environment resource paper

15 December 2005

ALGA has today released a resource paper to promote council initiatives to achieve age-friendly built environments. Age-friendly built environments: Opportunities for local government contains six fact sheets and case studies covering a range of age-friendly built environment issues relevant to local councils. These are:

  • Promote age-friendly built environments
  • Create safe and secure pedestrian environments
  • Foster age-friendly community planning and design
  • Improve mobility options for seniors
  • Support recreation facilities, parks and trails
  • Encourage housing choices

The paper is an initiative of the Australian Local Government Population Ageing Action Plan, which aims to build the capacity of local government to respond to ageing communities. ALGA acknowledges the strong support of the Australian Government for the plan and its associated activities.

ALGA President, Cr Paul Bell, said that ALGA has placed a high priority on promoting age-friendly built environment issues and has supported the Australian Government's National Speakers Series, A Community for All Ages - Building the Future.

"Local government is uniquely positioned to support age-friendly built environments by coordinating decision making within their local community, promoting awareness of age-friendly built environments and by developing and implementing community design plans, strategies and policies that support age-friendly built environments," Cr Bell said.

The resource paper is available on ALGA's Planning for an ageing community website.
