Milestone for local government as resolution passes both Houses

October 17, 2006

The President of the Australian Local Government Association, Cr Paul Bell, applauded the successful passage of a motion in the House of Representatives late today recognizing the role of local government in Australian federalism.

Cr Bell congratulated all parties in both Houses for their support of the motion.

"I am delighted at the bipartisan support it has received and the length of debate is testament to the support in the community and in Parliament for the role local government plays in our federal system."

"In particular, I congratulate Local Government Minister Jim Lloyd for his work in strengthening the relationship between governments and for introducing the motion into Parliament.

"The motion acknowledges local government's significance in providing service and as representing and responding to the needs of local communities."

"The resolution also acknowledges the importance of consulting and cooperating with local government and signifies the importance of all spheres of government working together to address the challenges faced by local communities."

The motion was passed by the Senate on September 7. ALGA worked with the Australian Government on developing the resolution, which was part of the Government's response to the Fair Share report on cost shifting, chaired by the current Speaker of the House of Representatives David Hawker.

"We view this as an important stepping stone towards our longer term goal of full constitutional recognition," Cr Bell said.
