Counter terrorism
In the 2006/07 Budget the Australian Government announced funding of $8.4 million over four years to improve Australia's ability to respond to chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) incidents. The funding will be managed by Emergency Management Australia, to ensure interoperability with local, regional and state level services. The funds are allocated to:
- $6.0 million will be used to develop Australia's CBRN capabilities including detection, decontamination rapid mitigation, site restoration, and specialised personal clothing and equipment
- $2.4 million will provide for deployable mortuary services, including victim identification, to help manage large numbers of fatalities that might result from terrorist attacks involving CBRN weapons
The Australian Government will provide $9.5 million over three years (including $4.3 million in capital funding) to the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) to enhance the Government's understanding of the regional environment in respect of terrorism-related issues and their impact on Australia's interests.
Biosecurity
The Australian Government will provide $10.0 million over four years to continue the Enhancing Animal Health Infrastructure programme that focuses on Australia's preparedness for biosecurity threats and emergencies in the agricultural, fisheries, forestry and food sectors.
