Local government expenditure
The range and scope of local government functions has expanded over recent decades. Despite these increasing demands, local government's sources of revenue have remained unchanged, resulting in a significant increase in the financial pressures faced by local councils.
Local government revenue sources
In 2003-04, local government's total revenue was $20.3 billion received from taxation, fees and user charges, plus grants and subsides from the Commonwealth, state and territory governments.
State funding to local government
The States and the Northern Territory offer a variety of grants to local government however, it is difficult to determine exactly how much is transferred.
