National General Assembly
ALGA convenes the National General Assembly of Local Government each year. At the NGA a workshop on population ageing issues is held, which provides delegates with the opportunity to identify and share information on key issues facing local councils in Australia. Topics vary each year as do presenters, ranging from leading experts and academics, to local councils showcasing innovative projects, programs and policies.
7 - 10 November 2004
The ageing symposium showcased a range of practical ideas and initiatives to assist councils plan for the future housing and residential care needs of ageing communities. Speakers included:

- Matthew Evans, Adviser - Planning, Municipal Association of Victoria
- Judith Stubbs, Researcher, Judith Stubbs and Associates

An older Australia: Challenges and opportunities for local government
To assist councils to better understand the implications of ageing at both a national and local level, the Office of an Ageing Australia held a workshop at the 2003 National General Assembly, which brought together the following speakers for the workshop:

At the 2004 National Local Roads Congress a workshop was held - Showcasing best practice: Mobility for older people - community transport, which allowed opportunities for sharing ideas and discussing innovative programs. Workshop presentations by: Ms Anne Harris, Chief Behavioural Scientist, Royal Automobile Club of Victoria; Ms Elly Milne, Coordinator of Community Transport and Home Assist, Barossa Council and Mr Mick Bell, Road Safety Officer, Narromine Shire Council.

International Microsimulation Conference on Population, Ageing and Health
Modelling our future
The primary focus of the conference was on microsimulation models and their applications, but other modelling approaches used to examine population ageing and health issues were also presented.

An ageless workforce : Opportunities for business symposium
The Symposium raised the awareness of the business community of the labour market impacts of demographic change and how current employment practices affect the workforce participation of workers as they age.

Policy implications of the ageing of Australia's population conference
The conference explored the policy implications of the ageing of the Australian population across a broad range of topics, including its effects on economic growth, distribution of government revenue and expenditure in the long run, superannuation, health, the provision of long term care and housing arrangements and the like.

Second world assembly on ageing
The Second world assembly on ageing in 2002 was devoted to the overall review of the outcome of the first World Assembly, as well as to the adoption of a revised plan of action and a long-term strategy on ageing.
