Section A - Who responded to the survey?
State and Territory
ALGA received 232 responses to the survey, representing 35% of Australia’s 673 local councils. Overall, the highest response rate was from NSW, accounting for 63 responses or 27% or the total response. In contrast, the highest response rate by an individual state or territory was Victoria, with 60% of the state’s 79 councils responding to the survey. Other high response rates included South Australia (48.57%) and Tasmania (48.28%).

Location
Local councils in rural Australia returned the highest number of surveys (126), accounting for 62% of the total response rate. Metropolitan councils returned 63 surveys.

Position
As table three shows the majority of respondents to the survey identified themselves as either a Director/Manager (37.93%) or Officer (38.79%) within their local council. Only one elected representative responded to the survey.
