International liaison

Update: 23 January 2006

Your chance to help councils overseas
The Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF) Pacific Project office in Suva, Fiji, has requested the assistance of ALGA to disseminate information on opportunities for Councils to become involved in international local government development projects.

As part of its regional local government capacity building project in the Pacific, CLGF is scaling up one of its key technical support mechanisms, the Commonwealth Local Government Good Practice Scheme, initially in Papua New Guinea and later on to Fiji, Kiribati and Vanuatu.

Councils in Australia that are interested in the mutual benefits that come from participation in international cooperation and partnership projects are encouraged to consider this opportunity. Apart from providing technical support to a local authority in a developing country, such projects have the potential for enhancing professional local government development from a global perspective.

Australian local government seeks closer relations with local governments in other countries, particularly in the Asia Pacific region. Wherever possible, it offers assistance to emerging systems of local government in the region and elsewhere. To achieve these objectives, ALGA supports, promotes and undertakes a number of activities in the international realm.

ALGA is a member of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), through its membership of UCLG Asia Pacific (UCLG-ASPAC). ALGA President, Cr Paul Bell is Vice-President UCLG-ASPAC with portfolio responsibilities of capacity building, training and research.

ALGA is also a member of the Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF), working to promote and strengthen democratic local government throughout the Commonwealth.

Local government also supports the establishment of a national network of local governments undertaking activities to help the people of East Timor to realise a sustainable future.

This policy section provides information on ALGA activities in the international liaison portfolio.
