Population Impacts: Old Age or New Age regions?

The Regional Cooperation and Development Forum now in its seventh year, brings together local government representatives and economic development practitioners to examine the performance, prospects and policies for Australia's regions.
The influential State of the Regions report for 2003 will also be launched and highlighted at the Forum. The report analyses regional trends in economic growth, population, income, employment and unemployment and looks in depth at major issues impacting on regional economic performance.
This year's report will investigate the implications for an ageing population and the effect of ageing on the fiscal position of local government will be analysed.

- Professor Peter McDonald
- Peter McDonald is Professor of Demography and Head of the Demography and Sociology Program at the Australian National University (ANU). He is also Co- Director of the Australian Centre for Population Research, a joint research centre of the ANU and the Adelaide University. Professor McDonald's work has focused on theory relating to low fertility, the implications of low fertility for population futures and upon related policy options. In recent years he has published on population dynamics and their implications for ageing and the labour force. This has included several recent papers on the measurement of international migration and on outcomes for international migrants in Australia. More broadly, he is interested in social change and its theoretical explanations and the processes of adaptation of policy to social change. Included in this is his recent work on the projection of housing demand in regions of Australia and an explanation of changing rates of home ownership in Australia. He is also preparing a comprehensive reform package for work and family policy in Australia.

- Dr Peter Brain, co-founder of National Economics, will present the influential State of the Regions2003 report at the Forum. Analysing regional trends in economic growth, population, income, employment and unemployment and providing an indepth look at major issues impacting on regional economic performance, State of the Regionsis widely regarded as the definitive report on the health of Australia's regions.
- Dr Peter Brain is one of Australia's best known and widely respected economists. One of the few to forecast the current Asian economic crisis, Dr Brain is a well known participant in economic debates. He has taken part in over 150 past and on-going projects in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Widely published on matters of concern to regional economies, Dr Brain regularly presents detailed analyses of the economic performance and specific outlook of regions.
- Mr Craig Shepherd
- Craig Shepherd is currently Principal Economist with National Economics, Melbourne. Whilst completing his PhD thesis at Monash University he has spent the past five years consulting to the firm's large range of corporate and government clients. A large part of Mr Shepherd's time at National Economics has been spent developing a regional economic database product called YourPlace.
