Welcome to the 4th National Local Roads Congress- one of the most important annual events on the local government calendar.
This Congress comes at a critical time for the future of local road funding.
Securing the continuation and growth of the Roads to Recovery program and ensuring that local government has a positive and collaborative role in the development of AusLink are real challenges that will require strong and decisive input from us all.
Congress will provide an unique forum to discuss these and other key transport issues from a local government perspective. It is also a great opportunity to interact with policy and decision-makers from all spheres of government and industry.
The Australian Local Government Association is delighted to host the National Local Roads Congress and welcomes your participation. I am sure debate will be enthusiastic and constructive.
I very much look forward to meeting you in Kalgoorlie.
Councillor Mike Montgomery
ALGA President
I would like to extend a very warm Goldfields welcome to delegates of the 4th ALGA National Local Roads Congress being held in Australia's largest outback city, Kalgoorlie-Boulder.
Kalgoorlie-Boulder lies in the heart of outback WA and is a major road and rail transport hub, strategically located on the trans-continental railway and major east-west and north-south road corridors.
The City also acts as a road/rail transport and service hub for the vast Goldfields mining region, Australia.s premier gold and nickel producing area. The diverse Goldfields-Esperance region also encompasses farming, pastoral and fishing areas and supports a vibrant tourism industry. Kalgoorlie-Boulder has been named Western Australia's top tourism town for 2002.
Kalgoorlie-Boulder.s proud history dates back to the discovery of gold in 1893 and this year we celebrate 100 years of C.Y.O'Connor's Golden Pipeline, which carries precious fresh water over 600km from Mundaring Weir near Perth.
The future well-being of Australia's regional transport and local road infrastructure has a direct impact on the economy of the nation. Local government, custodian of the majority of the nation's road network, will continue to play a significant role in the development and preservation of these valuable assets.
This year's Congress in Kalgoorlie-Boulder is set to produce lively debate on future proposals affecting the way we fund our road and transport needs. Your stay will be made more enjoyable by the friendly and welcoming nature of Goldfields people and a vast array of interests for visitors who wish to explore our City and its surrounding region.
